Tasmania is located off the coast of Australia in the far south east, separated from the mainland by the Bass Strait. As the 26th largest island in the world (not including Australia as some would say), it is surrounded by the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Tasmania’s position also places it in the pathway of the ‘Roaring Forties’, the name given to the strong and prevailing westerly winds that encircles the globe.

Tasmania’s location means some of its coastal islands are subject to some strong and changeable weather conditions, although some of those on the east coast of Tasmania are afforded some protection. Yet it is these islands that provide visitors some of the most scenic, historic and nature based attractions to be found.
