Saltwater River

The Tasman Peninsula, famous for its Port Arthur, has several other important historic locations that include Saltwater River. Part of the convict trail, Saltwater River is the site of the fascinating Coal Mines Historic Site. Unlike the popular Port Arthur, you are more likely to see less crowds when visiting these ruins, affording you the opportunity to feel the sense of isolation and desolation that would have been experienced by the convicts of the past.

Saltwater River Probation Station was the first probation station established on the Tasman Peninsula, with men arriving on the 29th March 1841 from the ship the 'British Sovereign'. The station was to be an agricultural station and the men, once their rough huts were ready, were set to breaking up the ground for farming activities. In time the station occupied some 300 acres, and was proficient in growing grain and vegetables for other centres, such as Port Arthur. The chief vegetables were potatoes, cabbages and turnips.
