FEATURE:
What can we
say, this great tourist attraction speaks for itself. With
over 30 km of Hawthorn hedgerows, recreating the fencing
used in an English countryside, it has been owned and
farmed by the same family, the “Archers” for over 170
years and offers a rare opportunity to experience early
colonial Tasmania.

Visit the historic farming village, walk pass
building from the 1820’s and explore the world of the
early settlers. Each building was constructed of pit
sawn timber or convict made bricks, and reveals a story
of the Archer family, their workers and the local
farming history.
Wander the
magnificent extensive parkland estate gardens that surround
the elegant Georgian main house, featuring over 180
varieties of old roses and many other interesting
perennials, as well as a collection of trees from around the
world, originally planted during the 1830’s. If you have a
chance, stay overnight at one of the historic and farm
cottages. These include the Coachman’s Cottage and the
Gardener’s Cottage, that offer authentic colonial
accommodation. We stayed in the one of the farm cottages
called Pumpkin Cottage.
What would a farm be without animals. When we
were there, there was a variety of animals from cows,
calves, sheep, lambs (feeding time is great), horses,
donkeys, goats, turkeys, chickens, ducks, many of which had
young ones.
The place offers refreshment, picnic
facilities, and will even cater for functions such as
birthday parties. |
