Devonport is often referred to as the Gateway to Tasmania because it is the
Tasmanian terminal for the Spirit of Tasmania Bass Strait service. Split into
two by the Mersey River, Devonport was once two towns Formby (west bank) and
Torquay (east bank). Merged in 1890 and named Devonport, the east bank of the
Mersey River is known officially as East Devonport. Devonport has a number of
tours and attractions. A tourist
orientated seaport city, there is an extensive range of accommodation
and visitor facilities, as well a range of eateries, to suit all budgets.
