George Town - Cities, Towns and Localities
Sea horse from Seahorse WorldGeorge Town is a riverside township with a relaxed and mild temperate maritime climate. Established in 1804 , it is the oldest town in Australia. There are many attractions including those of historical interest, including The Grove, a fascinating colonial Georgian home that is open to the public. Visit the Mount George Lookout for sweeping views of George Town and the Tamar River, it is also the location of a restored semaphore signal mast.

The George Town municipality also has a number of fine wineries that make up the Tasmanian Wine Route. They include the famous Pipers Brook and Providence vineyards. Drop into the visitor centre for a brochure. On route you can also enjoy the local ‘in season’ fruits and cheeses at places such as Hillwood, Lalla, Lower Turners Marsh and Windermere.

Only 6 km north is Low Head, where the Tamar River meets Bass Strait. There is the Low Head Pilot Station, maritime museum and lighthouse. You can also enjoy the guided tours of the local fairy penguin colony.
