Glenorchy - Cities, Towns and Localities

A major city with a strong industrial and commercial base, Glenorchy is just 8 km from Hobart.

First settled in 1809 at O’Briens Bridge, near what is now the city centre, Glenorchy was a rural settlement that continued through to the early 1900s, with the establishment of the Electrolytic Zinc Company (now Pasminco) at Risdon, and Cadbury’s confectionery factory at Claremont. In 1964, Glenorchy became the third Tasmanian city to be granted city status.

There is much to see and do with many historic buildings including Hestercombe Church (1833), Granton Roadhouse (1833), Austin’s Cottage (1817), Pitt Farm - Moonah (c 1813), Summerhome - Moonah (c 1840), and Undine - Rosetta (c 1830).

Other attractions include the Cadbury’s chocolate factory, Tasmanian Transport Museum and a model alpine village and railway exhibition at Claremont. Poimena Reserve at Austins Ferry features sweeping parkland with naturally occurring trees and shrubs and has fantastic views that sweep from the Derwent Valley to Tasman Peninsula. Tolosa Park is a popular picnic area, and Montrose Bay with the Montrose Bay Reserve was designed for passive recreation. So why not drop in from Hobart and pay a visit.

Glenorchy is located in the northern suburbs of the Greater Hobart Metropolitan. Today, the Royal Hobart Show is held in the Royal Hobart Showground in Glenorchy, just 10 km north of Hobart. The show runs over 4 days, that includes the Tasmania Show Day public holiday. The largest Royal Show held in Tasmania that provide all the fun of a show fair with livestock events, wood chopping, show bags, fair rides, and much more.
