Hastings / Hastings Caves State Reserve - Cities, Towns and Localities
The Hastings, is a very small settlement about 104 km south of Hobart on the Huon Highway. It’s popularity today is in part due to the Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs.

Those planning a visit to the Hastings Cave State Reserve will find the place well equipped for visitors, with the main facilities located near the Visitor Centre.

At the Visitor Centre you can purchase cave tour and thermal pool tickets, as well as learn about the unique values of the area from the helpful staff and interpretation displays. Food is also available at the Visitor Centre.

The Thermal Springs are located near the Visitor Centre and have wheelchair accessible toilets and changing rooms with showers. There are also picnic tables, and a shelter hut containing electric barbecues, powerpoints and open fireplaces with wood are provided. Hastings Pool is fed by pure spring water which maintains a constant temperature of 28 degrees Celcius year round.

There is also a short walking trail which begins near the Thermal Pool and takes you on an easy grade walk through beautiful forests. This trail is also accessible by wheelchairs, although some assistance will be needed to negotiate the start of the trail. The Hot Springs Track is slightly longer and will lead you to where the warm waters of one creek meet the cold waters of another.

• The Hastings Caves State Reserve offers visitors a variety of experiences, from relaxing in the warm waters of a thermal springs pool, walking in the rich forests of the reserve and, of course, the unique experience of exploring Newdegate Cave. Both the thermal pool and the trail which leads through the surrounding forests are accessible to wheelchair users.

Named after Sir Francis Newdegate, the Governor of Tasmania from 1917-1920, Newdegate Cave is the largest tourist cave in Australia which occurs in dolomite, rather than limestone.

Its richly decorated chambers began forming tens of millions of years ago. Don’t miss the opportunity to take a tour of the cave with qualified Parks and Wildlife Service guides.
