Huonville - Cities, Towns and Localities
The main town in the Huon Valley, Huonville is located on the Huon River in the south-east of Tasmania. Within the Huon Valley Council area, it is part of the popular Huon Trail tourism guide.

Huonville and the nearby Ranelagh are a thriving community servicing the regions apple, hops and timber industries, with Huon Valley being best known as Tasmania’s primary apple growing area, although fish farming is the new rising star industry.

Ranelagh, which was only a few kilometres from Huonville, and is now almost a suburb of Huonville, was originally a farm covering some one square mile of land that stretched from Ironstone Creek to the Huon River. This property that included the present site of Huonville, was originally known as Victoria1.

It was thought at the time, Ranelagh would become the major centre in the valley, however the construction of the bridge further downstream, was to ensure that Huonville prospered.

The town was originally named Victoria, but was changed when mail marked for Victoria, Melbourne was often sent to Victoria, Tasmania.3
