Almost midway between Launceston and Hobart, on the Midland Highway, is the
historic town of Oatlands. Located on the shore of Lake Dulverton, Oatlands is
the largest town in the Southern Midlands area, being the service centre for the
surrounding farming community.
Oatlands historic past is evident in the many sandstone buildings, in fact it
has the largest number of Georgian sandstone structures of any country town in
Australia, with a large number that can be viewed in the Main Street. Much of
the sandstone used for the buildings were quarried from the shores of Lake
Dulverton, a man-made lake that is also a wildlife sanctuary. Today, Lake
Dulverton Wildlife Sanctuary is designated an important Australian wetlands,
noted as the only known breeding site for the rare Great Crested Grebe1.
