1811 saw the first Europeans settle in Sorell, with the
first major influx of population following the closing of
the penal station at Norfolk Island in 1813. Sorell, then
part of what was known as Pitt Water, was the major centre
of wheat production for the whole of eastern Australia from
1816. Indeed, without it Sydney would have starved. In 1825,
Matthew Brady held the whole town to ransom, captured the
gaol and released the prisoners.
Today, Sorell is still a wealth of history in the many
historic buildings dating from the last century, and with
some from the early years of Van Diemen’s Land. It is a
great place to stay, close to beaches, foreshores and
forest. It is also close to and within easy reach of
destinations such as Eaglehawk Neck, the Tasman Peninsula
and Tasmania’s beautiful east coast.
