Located only 37 km south of St Helens, on the East Coast of Tasmania and the
eastern most end of the Fingal Valley, is the small town of St Marys.
Physically dominated by the mountain of St Patricks Head, Launceston is 129 km
to the north-west, St Mary was once the main coal mining town in Tasmania, with
its most eastern railway terminus.
Settled in the 1820s, there are several convict
ruins, as it was a convict probation station in the early days. The convicts
were involved in the building of the St Marys Pass. As well as the convict
ruins and craft shops, St Marys has great coastal views from the surrounding
hills and mountains, especially on the road north passing through St Marys Pass
and Elephant Pass. To the south is the Douglas-Apsley National Park.
