Table Cape - Cities, Towns and Localities
Table Cape is a landmark that dominates the Wynyard area, a prominent point of land north, jutting out 7 km into Bass Strait. A spectacular flat topped promontory with a sheer drop to the sea, the lighthouse on Table Cape was built in 1885. The whole of the Table Cape Plateau was taken up by Martin Alexander in 1870. The farm was then sold in the early 1900s and named the Table Cape Farm.

Frederick Matthias Alexander (1869-1955) the founder of the universal Alexander Technique, was born at Table Cape, attending school there.

It is also known that members of the Tommeginer Aboriginal people were living on the Fossil Bluff coastline until early 1841. Due to the areas being original heavily timbered, they did not travel far inland and so they relied mainly on seafood.

Table Cape Attractions

The view east from Table Cape Lookout.Fossil Bluff
•
West of Wynyard is an unusual geological structure comprising glacial Permian Tillite, sandstone and basalt known as Fossil Bluff. It offers excellent views, as well as being the location where the oldest Australian fossil of a marsupial was discovered. There is a small beach and in the rocks at either end of the beach, fossils can be found.

Table Cape Lookout
• Perched above the ocean about 190 metres above sea level, is Table Cape Lookout. From here your can get fantastic views.
The Table Cape Light Station
• Established in 1888, the lighthouse is part of a network of navigational aids. Elevated 190 metres above sea level and a tower height of 25 metres, it can be seen 16 nautical miles on the red range and 19 nautical miles on the white range.

Surrounded by scenic farmlands, its beginning was marked with the tragic death of the head-keepers 14 month old son, within three weeks of it opening. Although it is not known why he died, it is a sad entry in the lighthouse log book.
