Tahune Forest Reserve - Cities, Towns and Localities

The reserve is located on the banks of the mighty Huon River, in the Southern Forests region, just 70 minutes south of Hobart, part of the Huon Trail and is home to the famous Tahune Forest Airwalk. It is a must see on any travellers itinerary. It is also a popular place to picnic and cook on gas barbecues.

Beyond Tahune (gates*) is the Warra Long Term Ecological Research site, part of a worldwide forest monitoring and research network established under the United Nations Environment Program. Details can be read on the Huon Trail sign that is located near the picnic area, near the start of the Huon Pine Walk.

The visitor centre is your main entrance to Tahune. Here you can purchase your AirWalk tickets, local crafts and wood products, enjoy the bistro. The Bluestone Shelter is a great place for barbeques. There is a food outlet and a small conference venue. Contact the visitor centre for up-to-date information:

Gates - some areas of the Southern Forests have boom gates across the roads. These may be placed on a temporary or permanent basis for public safety or security purposes. Keys to gain access or information on close areas may be available from Forestry Tasmania’s Geeveston Office.

• This tourist attraction has been developed by Forestry Tasmania. Nestled amongst lush forest vegetation, the AirWalk provides a rewarding experience for all age groups. The AirWalk takes you 20 metres above the ground and the walk itself is more than half a kilometre long (597 m), among magical forest canopy, allowing visitors a unique view of the surrounding environment. The highlight is the cantilever that is 48 m above the river level, with fabulous views of the forest and the junction of the Picton and Huon Rivers.

The Tahune Forest Reserve also have serviced and non-serviced camping sites, with parking for coaches and caravans. The AirWalk and Visitor Centre operates seven days a week between 9 am and 5 pm (winter) and 9 am to 10 pm (summer), and also provides fine food, wines and retail products supplied by the region’s top producers. Geeveston to Tahune is approximately 28 km.

• A 20 minute loop walk providing one of the easiest places to view young and mature Huon Pines growing in their natural riverine rainforest environment.
