Taranna is a
small township located about 10 km north of the Port Arthur Historic Site on the
Tasman Peninsula. It was here that Australias built its first railway,
covering a distance of almost 7 km between the jetty at Little Norfolk Bay and
the prison. The line was designed to carry passengers and supplies being
unloaded at Norfolk Bay to save the ships the hazardous journey around Cape Raoul. As well as being the first railway in Australia, it was also the only one
using human horsepower along the length of the line. For up-to-date attractions, tours and other information drop into the local visitor
centre. For Taranna accommodation
