Tasmania’s
capital city Hobart is the second oldest city in Australia after Sydney. Founded in
1803, the city was used as an important strategic harbour for the British Navy.
While other more remote areas of Tasmania were used as penal colonies.
The main suburbs in the City of Hobart include:
Battery Point, Cascades,
Cornelian Bay, Dynnyrne, Fern Tree, Glebe, Hobart, South Hobart, West Hobart,
Lenah Valley, Lower Sandy Bay, Mount Nelson, Mount Stuart, New Town, North
Hobart, Salamanca, Sandy Bay and Tolmans Hill.
The Greater Hobart Metropolitan area include the cities of Hobart, Glenorchy
and Clarence, as well as including the municipalities of Brighton, Kingborough
and Sorell.
