Lake Catani Campground

• Bookings:
Peak period: campers must book in advance through the Entrance Station for all sites during the peak booking period. This includes November Cup Day weekend, Christmas/January school holidays, March Labour Day weekend and Easter school holidays. All bookings open on the 1st September each year.

No-peak period: for the convenience of those wanting to pre-book, which is advisable, sites 19, 22 to 29 30 to 35, 47 to 49 and 50-59 can be booked at anytime when the campground is open.
Sites 1 to 18, 20 to 21 and 36 to 46 cannot be booked outside the peak booking period. These sites are only available for causal arrivals on a  ‘first come, first served’ basis.

Group camping area: a special area within the campground (sites 22-29) has been set aside for schools and social groups. These sites must be booked in advance. Only two school or social groups can occupy the campground at any one time. The total number of school or social group campers must not exceed 50 on any one night.

• Accommodation: there are 50 campsites available. Each is defined by a numbered post and white pegs. Camping is only permitted within the boundary of these sites. Some of the sites area suitable for small caravans and campervans, while others are for car camping and tents only. Walk-in camp sites provide campers with even quieter surroundings. The maximum number of of people per site is six.

• Facilities: toilets, hot showers, dishwashing and a basic laundry (no washing machines) are provided. A separate disable hot shower and toile tis also available. Basic lighting in the amenities is provided by a small hydro-electric plant at Lake Catani. This is subject to an adequate flow of water during summer. A communal cooking shelter with tables, water and fireplaces is located adjacent to the amenities building. Camp fires are only permitted in group fireplaces and in the cooking shelter. Gas stoves are preferred and recommended. Collecting firewood within the park is prohibited, however firewood can be purchased in the park from rangers or campers can bring their own.

• Details: Lake Catani Campground is located on the Mount Buffalo plateau, about 28 km from Porepunkah. The surrounding national park offers a variety of landscapes from tall eucalypt forest to alpine heathlands and snowgrass plains. Camping is set amongst Snow Gum woodland.

access is via the Mount Buffalo Tourist Road, C535, then by turning down Lakeside Road to Lakeside Day Visitor Area and the campground. The Lake Catani Campgrounds are open from the beginning of November until the end of April.

REMOTE CAMPING
Mount McLeod Camping Area

• Accommodation: a maximum of ten people on any given night applies, either as one or a number of smaller groups, with the maximum length of stay being only 2 nights.

• Facilities: the designated camp area is sign posted and basic with no defined camp sites. A pit toilet is provide d100 m from thE camp area, while drinking water is available nearby.

• Details: this remote camp area near Mount McLeod provides hiking and camping opportunities for bushwalkers on Mount Buffalo Plateau’s sub-alpine northern edge. The camp area is on the south eastern side of the Mt McLeod Track opposite to Dells Plain. This camp area at 1,400 m is located on the edge of a snowgrass plain over looking areas of sphagnum moss bog. Do not walk through Bog areas as they are very fragile.

Drinking water can be obtained from the hardened access point approximately 100 m south west of the camp site where the stream crossed under the access track. Access to the camp area is along Mt McLeod Track, approximately 6.5 km from the Reservoir Picnic Area Carpark. Campers must obtain a remote camping permit from the Mount Buffalo Entrance Station prior to setting out. In winter extreme weather conditions can occur, follow the Parks Victoria information guidelines and be prepared!

REMOTE CAMPING
Rocky Creek Camping Area

• Facilities: the designated camp area is sign posted and basic with no defined camp sites. A pit toilet is provided 100 m from the camp area, while drinking water is available nearby.

• Details: this remote camp area near Rocky Creek provide extended hiking and camping opportunities for bushwalkers on Mount Buffalo Plateau’s sub-alpine south eastern edge. Located adjacent to Rocky Creek near the Half Day Bridge crossing, this camp area at 1,100 m is set amongst fine old growth Mountain Gum and Alpine Ash forest. Direct access to the camp area is along Rocky Creek Track, 6.5 km from the Reservoir Picnic Area Carpark. Alternatively a 22 km, two day loop walk is suggested.

Access to the camp area is limited with camping only available from 1st November through to 30th April. Campers must obtain a remote camping permit from the Mt Buffalo Entrance Station prior to setting out. In winter extreme weather conditions can occur, follow the Parks Victoria information guidelines and be prepared!
