The Murray River has been the preferred location for short or
long idyllic summer holidays for many visitors. Along its banks,
just two and a half hours from Melbourne, is the twin towns paddle steamer
capital of Australia, Echuca-Moama. The town is soaked in its rich heritage stemming from its days as a bustling paddle steamer port.
You can visit the Port of Echuca and discover its history when it
was a bustling river port. Today it is still a full working port
where visitors can view paddle steamers and river boats being
restored. You can travel down the river in a paddle steamer, hire a
houseboat, go fishing, swimming, canoeing or waterskiing.
Take the
self-guided tour of the Port Precinct. Wind through the Star Hotels
cellar escape tunnel and follow the path taken by drinkers trying to
flee the long arm of the law! Then drop into the Sharp's Magic Movie
House and Penny Arcade.
Make Echuca-Moama your base and enjoy the
many tourist drives, along some of the regions best scenic routes,
including the Barmah Forest and Wetlands, with over 200 bird
species. You can also drive through some of Victoria's oldest
heritage areas like Lockington and Rochester.
