Originally settled
around 1845 due to the large number of Mountain Ash and Blue Gums that could be
harvested quite easily on the gently sloping hills surrounding the town. Gold
was discovered in the 1870's bringing more settlers into the area and finally
the railway line in 1892 further boosted agriculture production in the region. A
number of industries have passed through the town over the preceding years with
the mainstay being dairy products. Grapes another important product is now grown
extensively around Leongatha and showcased at the annual Leongatha Food and Wine
