Located in the heart of Victoria and the Goldfields, central to Ballarat
and Bendigo, Maryborough
makes an ideal place to base yourself for exploring the region.
The area was
settled in the 1830's by the Simson brothers who were pastoralists, but the
discovery of gold soon saw a flood of prospectors to the area in search of their
fortune. Maryborough is renowned for its alluvial gold, and still attract
visitors today searching for that lucky find.
The legacy of those times are the impressive buildings historic cottages,
beautiful parks and gardens. Indeed, the Civic Centre, known as McLandress
Square is surrounded by one of Australia's most significant group of public
buildings that include the courthouse, fire station, post office and town hall.
