in Melbourne including hire car, taxis, train, buses and the famous trams. Among
these, Melbourne offers two free services:
- City Circle Tram
For tourist, shoppers and families, this is a free and convenient way to get

Melbournes Trams
Melbourne has one of the largest tram
and light-rail networks in the world. The city's first trams, which were
horse-drawn, began operating in 1884 on a suburban line. Cable trams were
introduced the following year, and Melbourne had its first electric tram in 1889
running on a two-and-a-quarter-mile line from Box Hill to Doncaster.
The eight refurbished W-class trams currently running on the City Circle Tram
line entered service between 1936 and 1956 the oldest is No. 728 and the
youngest No. 1020. All were built at the former Melbourne and Metropolitan
Tramways Board workshops.

Metlink Melbournes Public Transport
To travel on the non-free public
transport you will need to purchase a Metcard. These can be purchased from shops
displaying blue Metcard signs, train station Metcard vending machines and
onboard buses and trams (coin-only on trams).
Metcards must be validated before entering a train platform and each time you
board a tram or bus. Validators (green boxes) are conveniently located at
entrances to station platforms and on board trams and buses (however, when
purchasing your Metcard from a vending machine on a tram, it is automatically
validated for that journey only.
You can call into the Metlink Shop for public transport information including
timetables, maps, brochures and tickets. For more information about Melbourne's
public transport you can telephone 13 16 38 or visit
