Melbourne - Cities, Towns and Localities
There are number of modes for getting around Melbourne, from walking, using the public transport such as buses, trams and trains, as well hiring your own vehicle.

As well as some local car hire services, the major car hire companies are also represented in Melbourne.

Melbourne Public Transport
Melbourne Transport
• There are a myriad ways to get around in Melbourne including hire car, taxis, train, buses and the famous trams. Among these, Melbourne offers two ‘free’ services:
  • City Circle Tram — For tourist, shoppers and families, this is a free and convenient way to get around central Melbourne. The tram takes you past shopping malls, arcades and major attractions such as the Old Treasury Building, Parliament House, Docklands, Federation Square and the Princess Theatre. The City Circle Tram also links with other trams, trains and light-rail routes in and around Melbourne. To catch the City Circle Tram, simply wait at any tram stop along the City Circle Tram route. These tram stops are specially marked with a City Circle Tram sign.

Tram runs in both directions every 12 minutes, 7 days a week, between 10 am and 6 pm (except Christmas Day and Good Friday). During daylight saving extended hours, between 10 am and 9 pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Groups of 12 or more passengers are asked to contact the City Circle Tram customer service number on 1800 800 166 to arrange a booking. For further information about the City Circle Tram:
    — telephone 13 16 38 or
    — visit www.victrip.com.au

  • Melbourne City Tourist Shuttle — This free bus service stops at key tourist attractions and destinations in and around the City. Onboard you can view the city in comfort, while listening to an informative commentary about the city's attractions. You can hop on and hop off at any of the 15 stops.

Runs daily, every 15 minutes from 10 am to 4 pm. For more information:
    — visit www.thatsmelbourne.com.au
    — visit the Melbourne Visitor Centre at Federation Square located on the corner of Swanton and Flinders Streets
    — visit the Melbourne Visitor Booth in the Bourke Street Mall
    — call City of Melbourne Hotline on 03 9658 9658

Melbourne’s Trams
• Melbourne has one of the largest tram and light-rail networks in the world. The city's first trams, which were horse-drawn, began operating in 1884 on a suburban line. Cable trams were introduced the following year, and Melbourne had its first electric tram in 1889 — running on a two-and-a-quarter-mile line from Box Hill to Doncaster.

The eight refurbished W-class trams currently running on the City Circle Tram line entered service between 1936 and 1956 — the oldest is No. 728 and the youngest No. 1020. All were built at the former Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board workshops.
Metlink — Melbourne’s Public Transport
• To travel on the non-free public transport you will need to purchase a Metcard. These can be purchased from shops displaying blue Metcard signs, train station Metcard vending machines and onboard buses and trams (coin-only on trams).

Metcards must be validated before entering a train platform and each time you board a tram or bus. Validators (green boxes) are conveniently located at entrances to station platforms and on board trams and buses (however, when purchasing your Metcard from a vending machine on a tram, it is automatically validated for that journey only.

You can call into the Metlink Shop for public transport information including timetables, maps, brochures and tickets. For more information about Melbourne's public transport you can telephone 13 16 38 or visit www.victrip.com.au
