Located approximately 35 km west of the Melbourne CBD, Melton
is considered part of the Greater Melbourne metropolitan area, although it is
the administrative centre of the Shire of Melton local government area that
embraces a number of townships and communities, the largest being Caroline
Springs and Melton.
With its long history and heritage, there is plenty for
the visitor to discover and learn about Melton's past. From the 'Kurung-jang-balluk'
or 'People of the Red Gum', who were the earliest inhabitants of the Melton
area, the impact on Melton from the discovery of gold in nearby Ballarat, and
the naming of the town after the Melton Mowbray hunting grounds in England, a
reminder that fox hunting was popular in the district.
