Mildura is the capital of the Mildura Murray Outback Region, an extraordinary mix
of agricultural abundance and stunning vast spaces. It's climate, often described as
Mediterranean, is perfect for all pastimes. This vibrant and growing city draws hundreds of
thousands of visitors each year to its resort like facilities, golf
courses, water activities, festivals, and many other attractions all
year round.
The original inhabitants of the area were thought to be the Keramin tribe. The
first European to travel through the area was in 1830 when Charles Sturt
travelled the length of the Murray River. Around 1847 the first white settlers
began to carve up the rich pasture lands. It was also at this time that the
first grape vines went in on a property called Yerre Yerre. This property located where Mildura now stands was
renamed to Mildura in 1858. Mildura meaning Red Earth in the Keramin
tribes language.
William and George Chaffey hailing from California migrated to
Australia in the 1880's, they bought large tracts of land in Mildura and
Renmark and with the help of the Alfred Deakin government proceeded with
a plan to irrigate vast areas of this rich Mallee country to provide an
economic base for settlers to come into the region.
