Morwell - Cities, Towns and Localities

Located in the Latrobe Valley, between Moe and Traralgon, the town of Morwell is the administrative centre for the City of Latrobe.

Accessed by both rail and road, the town's importance was as the centre of the state's brown coal mining industry. Visitors today can tour the PowerWorks Energy Technology Centre, the local power industry museum, providing multimedia and interactive exhibits, including large scale displays and working models. There are also tours to one of the open cut mines.

A number of other attractions include the Latrobe Regional Gallery, the Morwell Centenary Rose Garden and the Morwell National Park.

Gippsland Immigration Park

• Gippsland Immigration Park celebrates the contribution of immigrants to the development of Gippsland. Visiting the park you will learn about the history of immigration into Gippsland and the contribution immigrants have made to the Gippsland Region.

Latrobe Regional Gallery

• The architecturally designed Latrobe Regional Gallery is one of Victoria’s most exciting public galleries, housing seven gallery spaces and a sculpture courtyard, presenting exhibitions that showcase works ranging from contemporary art and design to traditional painting by some of Australia’s most iconic artists. There is a gallery shop and a cafe.

Morwell Centenary Rose Garden
• Forming the western entrance to the Morwell Business District, Civic Centre, Art Gallery and the Justice Precinct is the spectacular Morwell Centenary Rose Garden of international significance.

Established on a disused former railway cutting, the garden was developed by ten months of hard work by a group of local volunteers with the generous support of local businesses and organisations. Opened in November 1992, the garden now proudly showcases some 3,000 roses in manicured beds edged with paving stones, complementing the magnificence of the entire garden.

This community garden is a continuing community work undertaken by the ‘Friends of the Rose Garden’, volunteers and sponsors with the generous support of Latrobe City Council.

PowerWorks Energy Technology Centre

• Powerworks is the public access point to the vast Victorian Power Generation Industry which supplies more than 85% of Victorias Electricity requirements. Powerworks provides a range of Programs or experiences tailored for groups with different needs and the Powerworks Centre is the starting point for the many tours and programs into the mines and Power Stations of the Region.

• Run by a group of volunteer enthusiasts dedicated to the preservation and study of all things Morwell and the surrounding districts. The in-house research facilities has a collection consisting of items of local interest including an extensive photo collection, maps, family history records and much more. There are articles and some small objects relevant to Morwell and its people, all of which can be searched for on our catalogue. Included in the collection are photo albums from schools now closed or merged, eg Morwell Technical School and Morwell High School.
