Nelson - Cities, Towns and Localities
Nelson is a picturesque township located on the pristine Glenelg River. Connected to Portland by the Portland-Nelson Road, the town is part of the Great South West Walk, a 250 km loop walk.

With the South Australia border just 4 km to the east, and Portland just under 70 km to the north-west, Nelson provides a great base from which to explore the attractions in the surrounding region.

With its close proximity to the Southern Ocean, wild beaches, estuary and river, boating and fishing are popular activities. Taking a swim in the ocean is not advisable, due to the dangerous undertows. Check with the visitor centre for the best locations for swimming. They can also advise on the best fishing spots and anything else you may need to know.

Check out our listing of Nelson accommodation. In addition to our listed online travel guide information, contact the local tourism visitor centre for your destination for more attractions, tours, local maps and other information.

Nelson Attractions

Princess Margaret Rose Cave
• Lower Glenelg National Park via Nelson • Ph: 08 8738 4171
• One of the must see attractions is this underground wonderland, set in natural bush of the Lower Glenelg National Park. The guided tour takes in the wonders of stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, rimstone pools, cave coral, among the many amazing formations.

The interpretive centre provides a visual display on the discovery of the cave by the early pioneers and how the cave was first formed. There is a kiosk providing drinks, snacks and souvenirs. There are also basic bush cabins for hire, plus ten un-powered campsites and seven un-powered van sites. See website for details.
Great South West Walk
• The Friends of the Great South West Walk Inc
• Whilst Portland is officially the start of a 250 km long bush walking trail, there is no reason why you cannot do some or all of the walk from Nelson. The walk itself can be broken up into 2 hour short loop walks, 17 shorter sections all up, making it suitable for most ages and abilities. For the intrepid walker you can do the whole 250 km walk, which begins at the Portland Maritime Discovery and Visitor Information Centre.

The trail winds around three national parks, hardwood forests, the pristine Glenelg River and the township of Nelson. Along the way are aboriginal heritage sites, vast sand dunes, sandy bays, beaches, and the rugged cliffs that overlook the spectacular sound, sight and smell of the Southern Ocean. There are freshwater lakes, the Cape Nelson Lighthouse and the stunning Bridgewater Bay. Of course, the walk brings you close to mother nature with her diversity of natural fauna and flora that include Blue and Southern Right Whales, a mainland Fur Seal colony, Australia’s only mainland Australasian Gannet rookery, just for starters.
