Rutherglen - Cities, Towns and Localities
Named after the Scottish town of Rutherglen (just outside of Glasgow), Rutherglen is a small Victorian town near the Murray River border with New South Wales, located in a region full of vineyards.

Once a major gold mining town, Rutherglen’s history is still evident in the number of historic buildings.

The start of Rutherglen’s wine interest goes back to the early 1800s, with winemakers of the day taking advantage of the mild climate and fertile land in the region. This makes Rutherglen one of the oldest wine-growing areas in Australia.

Today, Rutherglen is renowned for producing robust reds that cellar well for many years. The region is also known for crisp whites and superb fortified wines, especially muscats. With a number of cellar doors in the area, Rutherglen is a popular destination for those seeking to sample and stock up their own collection of wines.

For more information read our listing of wineries and vineyards, or drop into the local visitor centre. Check out our listing of Rutherglen accommodation.
