Sale - Cities, Towns and Localities

Gippsland's first city and originally called Flooding Creek until 1850 when the name was changed to Sale after Sir Robert Sale who was killed in action during the 1845 Afghan War.

The town started to expand when the gold rush started nearby in Omeo then the swing bridge and Sale canal were built during the late 1880's which opened the town up to shipping. The railway also arrived at around this time making travel to and from Melbourne quicker.

The RAAF air base was constructed here in 1841 further establishing the town as a regional centre.

Sale is the gateway to the Ninety Mile Beach area, the Gippsland Lakes and the wonderful mountain areas and mountain villages nearby.

Sale Attractions

Baw Baw National Park
• So close to Melbourne and perfect for that summer or winter getaway. This 13300ha sub alpine park protects the ancient forests in the Thomson and Aberfeldy River valleys along with the Baw Baw plateau a region that supports native snow gums and extensive alpine heaths.

Ninety Mile Beach
• It is a delight to walk, over the Golf Links at Golden Beach and Loch Sport and be among the kangaroos, emus and echidnas. Take care along the roads at night when the wild life can be seen. Even an owl may be caught viewing the scene from the road at night and the kangaroos really do shine in the headlights so, slow down, dip your lights and enjoy them!

Sale Common Wetlands
• This internationally significant wetland comprises 308 hectares of predominantly freshwater marsh, but also extensive areas of grassland and river redgum woodland. A 460 metre long boardwalk wends its way through a variety of habitat to enable visitors to experience the hundreds of permanent and migratory bird species, particularly swans; herons, egrets and spoonbills. A short walking track from the car park leads to a public bird 'hide'.
