Stawell is a
bustling rural city and service centre for The Grampians National Park
and is a great place to base your self when visiting the region. When
gold was found in the area in 1853, people poured into the area and by
1854 there was around 5,000 more prospectors in the Pleasant Creek
Goldfields seeking their fortune. Then in 1857 the discovery of rich,
alluvial leads at Commercial Street and Deep Lead, saw another influx of
20,000 people. Proclaimed as Stawell in 1858, it was now well and truly
on the map. In April 1878, the Stawell Athletic club staged its first
Stawell Gift. Today, it remains one of the richest, professional foot
races in the world.
