Australia has a region known as the high country or the
Australian Alps, where some of Australia’s myths and traditions of
Australian identity were born. This is the locale of Australia’s
most famous man of the mountains - The Man from Snowy River, captured in the poem “The Man from Snowy River”
and written by one of Australia’s most
famous poets,
Andrew Barton (Banjo) Paterson.
The Victorian Alps (Victorian Alpine Region) encompasses a region that includes
Mount Bogong, Mount Beauty,
Mount Buffalo,
Mount Buller,
Falls Creek,
Dinner
Plain, Mount Hotham,
Tawonga and
Tawonga South, to name just a few.
The Victorian Alps and
Snowy Mountains region contain some of the highest section of Australia’s Great
Dividing Range. the highest region in the Victorian Alps is Mount Bogong at
1,986 m, with
Mount Kosciuszko at 2,228 m located in the south-western corner of
New South Wales.
