Wangaratta - Cities, Towns and Localities
Wangaratta or “Wang” as the local call it, is a bustling rural city, with a broad main street, historic buildings and riverside parklands. It is a great place to make base from which to visit the surround region.

Wangaratta is surrounded by a geographically diverse and scenic region offering a diversity of activities and things to do. From the thrills of nearby Falls Creek, Mount Buffalo and Mount Hotham, four wheel driving, bush walking, fishing or the delights of the world class wines and gourmet produce. Wangaratta is also considered Australia’s home of jazz with the annual ‘Wangaratta Festival of Jazz’.

Wangaratta Attractions

Rural City of Wangaratta
Located in North East Victoria, the Rural City of Wangaratta encompasses the Alpine Valleys of the King and lower Ovens Rivers.

The Shire of Milawa was created on 18 November 1994. It was formed from the merger of the City of Wangaratta, the Shires of Oxley and Wangaratta and parts of the Shires of Beechworth, Benalla and Yarrawonga. The Shire of Milawa was then renamed the Rural City of Wangaratta on 29 June 1995.

Today, some of the villages/towns and localities in the region include:

Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail
Email Australia’s premier rail trail experience. The Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail is a bitumen sealed trail following 98 kms of historic railway lines from Wangaratta to Bright, via Myrtleford and also connecting with Beechworth. Within 3 hours of Melbourne, the trail is a healthy, leisurely way to experience this unique region of Australia. Your journey can begin at Bright, Myrtleford, Beechworth, Wangaratta or from many old  station sites. The trail has gentle gradients making it suitable for all ages and levels of fitness.

Bicycle hire is available at Wangaratta, Beechworth, Bright and Myrtleford. Visitors can fly into Albury or Mt Hotham from Melbourne and Sydney or catch the train to Wangaratta. You can pick up the brochure and map from the local visitor centres at Wangaratta, Beechworth, Myrtleford and Bright.

Wangaratta is officially titled ‘Australia’s Capital of Jazz’, due to the incredible success of the ‘Wangaratta Festival of Jazz’, acknowledged as one of Australia’s biggest regional music events. This festival has been acknowledged as a Tourism Victoria Hallmark Event and Tourism Australia’s ‘Most Significant Regional Festival’.
