At a height of 1.57 m, from the birds’ crest to the base of the rocky outcrop on which it perches, it dates from 1876 and are beautifully coloured with the majolica glazes (a hallmark of the English Minton firm). Majolica is a translucent lead glaze that named after the brightly coloured ‘majolica tin-glazed wares of the Italian Renaissance’. The firm is believed to have only made 12, with only eight apparently surviving today, one of which is now in this museum. Another peacock is to be found in the Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo.
