Werribee - Cities, Towns and Localities |
|
Considered a suburb of Melbourne, Werribee is located approximately 32 km
south-west of Melbourne, and part of the LGA City of Wyndham. Werribee, is
midway on the Princes Highway to
Geelong. It is situated on
the Werribee River, which has its headwaters north of Ballan. Werribee and the
greater region of Werribee Park offers visitors a wealth of activities and
attractions that are easily accessible from Melbourne including Victoria’s Open
Range Zoo, Werribee Park Mansion, Shadowfax Winery and the State Rose Garden.
The Chirnside family originally owned much of the Werribee Plains and built
Werribee Park Mansion in the late 1870s, the largest private residence in
Victoria. Today the mansion has become one of Victoria’s major tourist
attractions and was bought by the State Government and restored to its original
splendour so visitors can see just how one of Victoria’s richest and most
privileged families lived. The 12 hectares of park include manicured gardens and
a farm yard area complete with blacksmith facilities.
