Yackandandah - Cities, Towns and Localities

Athenaeum (1878) - now houses the visitor centre.

Located in the ‘Valleys of Gold’ district, Yackandandah is a historic village from the goldmining era, which has a National Trust classification on its whole commercial area.

The town offers a number of activities from a walk down the historic High Street, walking tracks, scenic drives, museum, and a number of local businesses ranging from Kirby's Flat Pottery, Indigo Irises, Lavender Patch Farm and Vienna Pattisserie, to name just a few. We also offer some great places to stay from motel, holiday park, cottages and bed and breakfast.

Yackandandah Attractions

The Athenaeum
• Now housing the Visitor Centre, this historic building was built in 1878, and later housed approximately 3,000 books, being the social and intellectual centre of the town. It contained: “two reading rooms, a few stuffed birds, a boomerang or two”. A full sized billiard able was added in 1899. The temple-like composition of the facade, common to many Athenaeums and Masonic Lodges, is of particular interest.
