Balingup - Cities, Towns and Localities
Although little is known about the Aboriginal history of the area, the name ‘Balingup’ is thought to be a corruption of an Aboriginal name ‘Balingan’, ‘Baylya’ or ‘Balunga’, an Aboriginal warrior who was born in the region.

The first white explorers were on an expedition to find a route from Albany to Vasse when they came across the Blackwood River at Southampton and Wrights Bridge in 1842. Richard Jones took up 10 acres in the region and built a mud brick homestead named ‘Southampton’ in 1854. In 1859, Walter Padbury took up 40,000 acre Pastoral lease that included ‘Brooklands’ and ‘Ferndale’. Today you can still visit the historic homestead ‘Ferndale’ on Nannup Road, as well as a number of other historic buildings.

Balingup is a beautiful place to visit, with wonderful scenery of rolling green hills, that are shrouded in mist during winter, fantastic sunsets and spectacular night skies during summer. Spring has the bright colours of the tulip festival, and flowering orchards, whilst autumn also brings vivid colours.
