Kununurra is your gateway to the Kimberley
region, in the extreme north east of the state, some 3,214 km from
There’s Purnululu (Bungle Bungle) National Park (with its thousands of
huge), beehive-shaped mounds, Lake Argyle (the 1,000 square kilometre inland sea
formed by the damming of the Ord River), and the Argyle Diamond Mine.
With the planning of the Ord River Irrigation Scheme in the 1950s, a town
site was also included in the proposed development. A number of names were put
forward and the eventual spelling of ‘Kununurra’ was approved - a derivative
from the Aboriginal word ‘Cununurra’ said to mean ‘black soil’. The town site
was gazetted in 1961.
