Monkey Mia / Shark Bay World Heritage Area - Cities, Towns and Localities
Monkey Mia is famous for the wild bottle-nosed dolphins, who for more than 25 years have come into the shore, almost on a daily basis, to eat fish and interact with the growing number of humans visitors.

The dolphins arrive mainly in the mornings, and the national parks rangers are there to distribute freshly caught fish for visitors to feed the dolphins. The feeding of the dolphins is strictly controlled, being offered only a third of their average daily intake of fish, to ensure that they don’t become dependent on handouts. There is no guarantee that you will get close to the dolphins, they are after all wild animals, but just being close to them is a unique and wonderful experience.

There is of course, more to Monkey Mia then dolphins. There are dugong, turtles, manta rays and whales. On offer are a number of cruise and tour operators, to take you up close to the unique wildlife and habitats of this region.

Then there are the stromatolites at Hamelin Pool, one of the oldest organisms on the planet, dating back some three billion years. These brown clumps look like rocks peeping out of the water, and offer an insight into the earth’s distant past.

Don’t forget to check out the Monkey Mia Visitor Centre. One of the special featues is the NatureBase DolphinCam. This webcam operates approximately 12 hours a day, capturing images of the foreshore where the dolphins come to mingle with humans. A selection of images are archive for view when the webcam is not operational.
