The gateway to Western Australia and the Nullarbor,
Norseman is located in the
Goldsfield-Esperance region and is the starting point of the Eyre Highway,
being the last major town in Western Australia before you reach the South
Australia border, some 720 km to the east.
The search for gold led to the
discover of gold in 1892, near Dundas, which saw the ‘Dundas Field’ being
proclaimed in August 1893. Then in July 1894, a prospector Laurie Sinclair on
his horse ‘Hardy Norseman’ stopped off to visit his brother whilst on his way to
Esperance. He tethered his horse overnight and in the morning was amazed to
discover his horse had pawed up a piece of gold bearing quartz, which had come
from a rich gold reef, which Sinclair named after his horse.
