Memorial to the Australian Light Horse
Waler Memorial
Bicentennial Park, Kable Ave
TAMWORTH NSW
David Evans was the instigator of
the project which would see a life size, life like Waler Horse with an
Australian Trooper saying farewell in the deserts of the Middle East. All up,
the project cost $200,000 which included the bronze Memorial and the very solid
base.
There are four large bronze plaques attached to the base telling the story of
the Australian Light Horse.
Over half a million horses were sent to India (for the Brits with the civil
uprising), for our troops in South Africa (Boer War) and to WW1 in the Middle
East. Just one horse, a gelding called Sandy came back home to Australia.
