There are war memorials located throughout Australia. Some are grand large places, whilst others are small dedications, but all are monuments to our fallen heroes. Many travellers include a visit to these sites as part of their holiday, so where possible we have provided information and links to them.

Orange War Memorial

Memorial Avenue
• Anzac Day, 1923 was the date for the dedication of the Memorial Avenue of Trees along Bathurst Road. Planted to honour the Orange soldiers who lost their lives in the Great War, the trees, known as the Cedars of Lebanon were selected as memorial trees as they were said to live for 500 years.

A tree guard surrounded each tree, on which an enamel plaque was attached. The plaque was inscribed ‘In Memory of’ followed by the name of the soldier and the name of the donor of the tree. Some 3,000 people, many who were relatives of the honoured soldiers, attended the ceremony. The avenue was later extended with trees in memory of nurses who served at the war front.

Although the avenue is still visible along Bathurst Road between McLachlan Street and Allenby Road, very few of the trees, or plaques remain. Check out the panoramic view of the event on the Orange City Council site.
