With the dizzy rate of change occurring with technology in our lives, new applications and the cross-over into every aspect of our lives, from the office to the home, it may be challenging for some small businesses to keep ahead of the changing landscape. Today, Social media is one aspect of the internet and mobile technologies that are effecting how we manage our businesses and promotion.

Most people these days would have heard of the term 'Social Media', many would use or interact with social media in their everyday lives, whether it is from their computer, mobile or tablet.

Broadly speaking social media is both web-based and mobile based technologies that provides for communication in an interactive dialogue.

Social Media can take a number of forms, from online forums, blogs, podcasts etc. Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein defined social media as

"a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, which allows the creation and exchange of user-generated content"

and created a classification scheme for the different social media types in their Business Horizons article (published in 2010). They describe six different types of social media: Collaborative projects, blogs and micro blogs, content communities, social networking sites, virtual game worlds, and virtual communities.1, 2

Today, many of these social media services can be pulled together via social network aggregation, that help user consolidate multiple social network profiles into one profile.

Social Media

Facebook
Launched in February 2004, Facebook is a social utility that connects people with friends and others who work, study and live around them. People use Facebook to keep up with friends, providing a social connection that permits the sharing of photos, videos and text updates. Users can create personal profiles, establishing relationships with people beyond their usual circle. It also allows for businesses to establish a Facebook profile. You can check out our page on Facebook AusEmade.
Pinterest
A content sharing service that allows members to "pin" images, videos and other objects to pinboards that you can create within your profile. Also includes standard social networking features. You can check out our page on Pinterest AusEmade.
Google+
Google Plus is another social network whose aims are to make sharing on the web more like sharing in real life. Check out Circles, Messenger and Hangouts, just a few of the things they have been working on. You can check out our page on Google+ AusEmade.
