Digital cameras provide an inbuilt method of automatically naming each image
file, some may offer a choice of methods, although for most people these naming
convention is not enough. So what do you do when you come back from holiday with
over 1,000 fantastic photos that need renaming? Well, if you are like us, you
might first sort the photos into sub-folders, each with its own name. We also,
like to include the six figure numeric date, starting with the year ie yymmdd or
080126. This date prefix gives our images a time stamp, which will also sort in
the correct date order when viewing your folder of image files. Following the
prefix, we often use the numeric series of numbers given by the camera, or we
may renumber the files for each category starting from ‘0001’ ie yymmddxxxx or
0801260001.
So what do you do, if you have a huge number of image files that you would like
to rename?
Some graphic packages may offer the ability to batch rename all your files,
whilst some viewer software such as IrfanView also provide the means to batch
rename files. Most however do have their limitation, so following are some other
dedicated tools that you may find of interest. |
